Ebook About NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The disappearance of a beautiful, charismatic mother leaves her family to piece together her secrets in this propulsive novel for fans of Big Little Lies—from the bestselling author of All We Ever Wanted Was Everything and the upcoming Pretty Things.“Watch Me Disappear is just as riveting as Gone Girl.”—San Francisco Chronicle Who you want people to be makes you blind to who they really are. It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan—a Berkeley mom with an enviable life—went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her body was never found, just a shattered cellphone and a solitary hiking boot. Her husband and teenage daughter have been coping with Billie’s death the best they can: Jonathan drinks as he works on a loving memoir about his marriage; Olive grows remote, from both her father and her friends at the all-girls school she attends. But then Olive starts having strange visions of her mother, still alive. Jonathan worries about Olive’s emotional stability, until he starts unearthing secrets from Billie’s past that bring into question everything he thought he understood about his wife. Who was the woman he knew as Billie Flanagan? Together, Olive and Jonathan embark on a quest for the truth—about Billie, but also about themselves, learning, in the process, about all the ways that love can distort what we choose to see. Janelle Brown’s insights into the dynamics of intimate relationships will make you question the stories you tell yourself about the people you love, while her nervy storytelling will keep you guessing until the very last page. Praise for Watch Me Disappear“Watch Me Disappear is a surprising and compelling read. Like the best novels, it takes the reader somewhere she wouldn’t otherwise allow herself to go. . . . It’s strongest in the places that matter most: in the believability of its characters and the irresistibility of its plot.”—Chicago Tribune“Janelle Brown’s third family drama delivers an incisive and emotional view of how grief and recovery from loss can seep into each aspect of a person’s life. . . . Brown imbues realism in each character, whose complicated emotions fuel the suspenseful story.”—Associated Press“When a Berkeley mother vanishes and is declared dead, her daughter is convinced she’s alive in Janelle Brown’s thriller, calling to mind Big Little Lies and Gone Girl.”—VarietyBook Watch Me Disappear: A Novel Review :
As a protagonist, Billie is very difficult to like. This aversion occurs almost immediately. Billie is a bohemian former hippie, who chafes at the constraints of her now-conventional suburban life. She is restless, bored and immature, longing for her youth and constant, spontaneous adventure. Then Billie abruptly disappears, presumed dead after a wilderness hike. Her distraught husband, Jonathan, and bereft daughter, Olive, grapple with her disappearance and loss, each combing through thier memories and exhaustively excavating the past. The first 144 pages consist largely of Jonathan and Olive thinking and wondering. Lots of interior monologues, introspection and rumination, but little action. Jonathan ruminates more than any man ever actually would. Then, by page 145, the story finally picks up speed and gains some traction. Gradually, a mystery develops surrounding Billie's sudden departure. Is Billie really gone? Was her disappearance an accident, voluntary or is she in danger? While the pace escalates, the reader is still left with a main character whose ever-increasing narcissism becomes even more apparent, as layers of her personality are revealed by those who knew her. For a "thriller" to be effective however, the reader must care why Billie went missing and what happened to her. The book falters on that point. The reader must want to discover the fate of an unappealing main character, and that's a tough sell. I didn't care that Billie was gone or why. I only cared because Jonathan and Olive did. Found some of the descriptions off-putting as well. Too many references to sour, curdled, congealed food and stained clothing and furniture. I realize the author was trying to depict an environment in the disarray of grief, but it made me cringe and want to clean for them. Overall, an interesting read that poses the question of how well we truly know the people in our lives. Gone Girl and its many less successful imitators have crowded bookstore shelves in recent years, so my natural tendency is to yawn when I come across another novel that marketers or critics compare to it. However, Janelle Brown's new thriller, Watch Me Disappear, merits the comparison. A forty-something Berkeley housewife mysteriously disappears, and what we think about her steadily erodes as the story unfolds. In the end, we're left shaking our heads, a little dizzy from all the surprises we've encountered as the tale reached its resolution.Sybilla "Billie" Flanagan lives with her husband Jonathan and fifteen-year-old daughter Olive in Berkeley's Elmwood District, in an old brown-shingle home just off College Avenue. They're a seemingly typical upper-middle-class Bay Area family. Jonathan is a senior editor at a magazine that covers the tech industry. Olive is a junior at a private, all-girls preparatory school in Oakland. And Billie, though an artist in her younger years, has devoted herself to homemaking. Now, however, Billie has been missing for nearly a year and is presumed dead. In the years immediately before her disappearance, she had left home from time to time for long weekends to hike the Pacific Coast Trail. But she hasn't returned from her last backpacking trip in Desolation Wilderness. She has simply disappeared, and a protracted search has failed to turn up any clue as to what happened to her. In his grief, and his concern for Olive, Jonathan has left his job at the magazine to write a memoir about his life with Billie. He's now in financial straits, struggling to pay the mortgage and dodging calls from Olive's school about her tuition bill—and he can't access the money from Billie's $250,000 life insurance policy because there's no death certificate. Billie is only presumed dead. Then things get worse.Gradually, Jonathan begins to learn unsettling facts about the life Billie led after running away from home at age sixteen. To make matters worse, Olive begins having conversations with her dead mother. She insists that Billie is alive and wants to be found. As Jonathan and Olive separately pursue investigations into their disappearing wife and mother, Billie's past life comes back to haunt them.Watch Me Disappear is suspenseful to a fault. Though a little slow on the uptake, the novel speeds up as the complications multiply—and most readers will be surprised by the ending.
